Broken Square – In Memory of Kazimir Malevich

I made this piece to honor the memory of the great pioneer of Suprematism, Kazimir Malevich. It took me a year to complete. There are 430 small/ textural squares protruding out from the panel. They are not visible in this picture because the image is so small. Malevich remarked: “ When, in 1913, in a desperate attempt to rid art of the ballast of objectivity, I took refuge in the form of the square…[ but ] the critics sighed, ‘All that we loved has been lost. We are in a desert’ …but the desert is filled with the spirit of non-objective feeling…! ” (K. Malevich)
